Who was the Monster with 21 Faces that blackmailed Japan's food companies?
In March 1984 the president of the confectioner Ezaki Glico was kidnapped and escaped three days later. Then a group calling itself the Monster with 21 Faces blackmailed Glico, Morinaga, Marudai and House Foods in turn, left poisoned sweets in shops and sent letters mocking the police to the newspapers. Twice the police saw a "fox-eyed man" they suspected of belonging to the group at a ransom drop, and twice they lost him. In August 1985 a letter announced the end of the blackmail and the group vanished; in 2000 the last statute of limitations ran out.

Nobody has read a single word of this book. Following the hands it passed through, the signature erased from its first page and the date of its parchment shows how far the case has been carried and where it stops. Decipherments have been announced many times; none has been accepted.
Voynich manuscriptThe Voynich scriptRadiocarbon datingWilfrid Voynich+5In December 1872 a ship was found alone in the mid Atlantic, still under sail. She was seaworthy and her cargo was aboard; her people were not. Following the ship that found her, the port where the hearing was held, the cargo she carried and the missing boat separates what was recorded from what was added later.

Only a century after it was found, once there was a way to look inside, did it become clear that the device computed the positions of the heavens and the timing of eclipses. Who built it is still unanswered.
