Nobody has read a single word of this book. Following the hands it passed through, the signature erased from its first page and the date of its parchment shows how far the case has been carried and where it stops. Decipherments have been announced many times; none has been accepted.
Voynich manuscriptThe Voynich scriptRadiocarbon datingWilfrid Voynich+5In December 1872 a ship was found alone in the mid Atlantic, still under sail. She was seaworthy and her cargo was aboard; her people were not. Following the ship that found her, the port where the hearing was held, the cargo she carried and the missing boat separates what was recorded from what was added later.

Only a century after it was found, once there was a way to look inside, did it become clear that the device computed the positions of the heavens and the timing of eclipses. Who built it is still unanswered.

The story that she carried gold sent related shares soaring twice, in 2000 and in 2018. In 2018 the Shinil Group said it had found her, advertised 200 tonnes of gold worth 150 trillion won aboard and sold a coin on the strength of it. The courts sent its officers to prison for a fraud that raised about 8.9 billion won. No evidence that the ship carried gold has ever appeared.

No one was caught, and the statute of limitations ran out in 2014. In 2019 a former gang member told the makers of SBS's Unanswered Questions that he had been involved, and after the broadcast in June 2020 the police reopened the case. The first court acquitted him, the appeal court gave him twelve years, and after the Supreme Court sent the case back he was acquitted again. Who killed the lawyer, and why, is still unknown.

As investigators closed in, he fled to China by boat in December 2008. In December 2011 came word that he had died in China, with a video of the funeral, but his cremated remains yielded no DNA, and sightings kept being reported. In 2016 prosecutors concluded after a fresh investigation that he was dead. Along the way, prosecution and police officials who took money from the organisation were also arrested and charged.
