How did the Rosetta Stone become the key to Egyptian hieroglyphs?
A granodiorite stele bearing a decree issued in 196 BC for Ptolemy V, in hieroglyphic, Demotic and Ancient Greek. A French officer found it near Rosetta in the Nile Delta in 1799; it passed to the British in 1801 and has been in the British Museum since 1802. In 1822 Jean-François Champollion announced how to read the hieroglyphs.

Nobody has read a single word of this book. Following the hands it passed through, the signature erased from its first page and the date of its parchment shows how far the case has been carried and where it stops. Decipherments have been announced many times; none has been accepted.
Voynich manuscriptThe Voynich scriptRadiocarbon datingWilfrid Voynich+5In December 1872 a ship was found alone in the mid Atlantic, still under sail. She was seaworthy and her cargo was aboard; her people were not. Following the ship that found her, the port where the hearing was held, the cargo she carried and the missing boat separates what was recorded from what was added later.

Only a century after it was found, once there was a way to look inside, did it become clear that the device computed the positions of the heavens and the timing of eclipses. Who built it is still unanswered.
