Where did the story of a round boat and a woman washed ashore in Japan in 1803 come from?
Four Edo-period texts tell of a strange round boat that drifted onto a beach in Hitachi Province in 1803. Inside the windowed vessel sat a young woman who spoke no language anyone knew and would not let go of a box, and the fishermen are said to have put her back in the boat and set it adrift. In the twentieth century it was retold as a UFO encounter, but the scholars who studied it read in it an old legend pattern and the fear of the outside world in an era of national seclusion. Whether anything really happened has never been established.

Nobody has read a single word of this book. Following the hands it passed through, the signature erased from its first page and the date of its parchment shows how far the case has been carried and where it stops. Decipherments have been announced many times; none has been accepted.
Voynich manuscriptThe Voynich scriptRadiocarbon datingWilfrid Voynich+5In December 1872 a ship was found alone in the mid Atlantic, still under sail. She was seaworthy and her cargo was aboard; her people were not. Following the ship that found her, the port where the hearing was held, the cargo she carried and the missing boat separates what was recorded from what was added later.

Only a century after it was found, once there was a way to look inside, did it become clear that the device computed the positions of the heavens and the timing of eclipses. Who built it is still unanswered.
