How were the 2001 Daejeon bank robbers caught 21 years later?
On 21 December 2001, in the underground car park of a Kookmin Bank branch in Dunsan-dong, Daejeon, two men seized a bag holding 300 million won in cash and shot dead a bank employee. The gun had been taken from a patrolling police officer two months earlier. Three men in their twenties arrested the next year were released for lack of evidence, and the case went cold. In 2017 DNA was recovered from a mask and a handkerchief in the getaway car, and in 2022 police arrested two men. In December 2023 the Supreme Court upheld life sentences for both.
