Who invented the life on the Moon that a New York paper reported in 1835?
In August 1835 the New York Sun ran six articles claiming that the astronomer Sir John Herschel had found life and a civilization on the Moon with a giant telescope. All of it was invented. The paper admitted in September that the articles were fabricated but never retracted them, and the reporter Richard Adams Locke acknowledged in 1840 that he had written them.

She was seaworthy and her cargo was aboard; her people were not. Following the ship that found her, the port where the hearing was held, the cargo she carried and the missing boat separates what was recorded from what was added later.

Only a century after it was found, once there was a way to look inside, did it become clear that the device computed the positions of the heavens and the timing of eclipses. Who built it is still unanswered.
